경희대학은 1981년 제36차 유엔총회에서 제정된 '유엔 세계평화의 날'을 기념해 매년 평화학술회의를 개최해 왔다. 1982년 9월에 제1차 회의를 연 후, 2009년에는 <제28주년 '유엔 세계평화의 날' 기념 경희평화워크숍>을 개최했다. 미래문명원이 주관한 이 학술회의는 '경희, 새로운 평화를 말하다‘는 주제를 다뤘다.
경희대학이 그간 지속해 온 평화학술회의는 평화연구·평화교육·평화운동의 지구적 확산에 기여해 왔다. 미래문명원은 평화학술회의 외에 인간과 문명, 인류역사에 대한 성찰을 바탕으로 '인간과 공동체에 대한 새로운 기획 및 인류 사회의 보편가치 확립'을 위한 학술회의를 정기적으로 개최하고 있다. 현대의 삶과 문명현상에 대한 정치·경제·사회·문화·과학 등 학제 간 연구를 통해 범지구적 교류협력의 장을 마련함으로써 대안 문명의 담론 형성을 촉진하고자 한다.
